Build-your-own audio products for kids

This project represented exciting new territory for Bose

A tight, autonomous team operating like a startup within a much larger comany, and a new product line targeting a previously untapped consumer audience. My team and I started from scratch, working with middle schools and STEM camps to test our concepts. We rolled up our sleeves, got out the scotch tape and crayons, and got schooled in what kids do (and do not) find compelling. That discovery process helped define the feature set and product requirements for a kid-buildable Bluetooth speaker and companion mobile app. The BOSEbuild Speaker Cube launched in 2016 and sold direct through bose.com and through major retail partners.

For our second BOSEbuild product, we dove deep into customer comments, feedback, and reviews.

People loved the educational content, and wanted more. An enormous amount of value lay in the user journey from unboxing through to final assembly. So we went all-in on the experience. We introduced augmented reality soundwaves. We created approachable and engaging animated explainer videos. We even partnered with a game design studio to include games rooted in the concepts of hearing, directionality of sound, and echolocation. Sure, your kid will end up with a great-sounding pair of headphones. But along the way they're going to discover how headphones work, how your ears work, and how to keep them healthy. Launched in 2018, BoseBuild Headphones sold direct through bose.com and retail partners.
